I have a lot of interests. As is increasingly the case, quite a few of them involve using a computer. I’ve been using computers since childhood and Free software since I heard about it in the late 1990s. Knowing that I can tinker with software until it suits my needs is quite satisfying but, as I’m fairly easily distracted, boy does it turn into a real waste of time if I should be doing real work. By real work I mean the reason I originally sat down in front of the computer before noticing that there’s a 1px blue line above the scrollbar in Nautilus that doesn’t look like it should be there. I’ve been a GNOME user since the pre 1.0 days and a big fan of the shift toward usability since 2.0.
I’m not sure if blogging my ideas here is surrendering to my distractability so much as hoping to inspire those with more skills and free time. I’ve certainly got a lot of Tomboy notes to put in the open before they go stale.
Lately I’ve been playing with menus, especially with Gimmie. To get started, here’s a mockup you may have seen that presents an alternative layout for Gimmie. Here’s a screenshot of an earlier verson of some code I wrote to reorganise Gimmie topics as menus; the code is now heading upstream.
More on menus soon.
